Vols' Young to miss 4-6 weeks
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP)
Volunteers coach Butch Jones announced the severity of Young's injury and the length of time he would be sidelined while responding to a fan's question on his ''Vol Calls'' radio show Wednesday night.
''It was kind of a fluke thing,'' Jones said. ''Running a route, he fell down on the ground, put his hand out to brace his fall and broke his hand.''
Tennessee hosts Western Kentucky on Saturday.
Young, a junior from Knoxville, moved from running back to wide receiver during spring practice after rushing for 140 yards on 33 carries last season. He caught a 9-yard touchdown pass, had a 58-yard kickoff return and gained 21 yards on two punt returns Saturday in a 45-0 season-opening victory over Austin Peay.
Jones also said on his radio show that defensive end Jacques Smith had pins removed from his fractured right thumb Wednesday. Jones said he would know later in the week about the availability of Smith and linebacker Curt Maggitt, who returned to practice this week after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee last November. Jones said ''there's an outside possibility'' defensive end Corey Vereen could play Sept. 14 at No. 2 Oregon as he recovers from a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee.
