SCOUT'S HONOR: Improving stock in the bowls

This week, we're taking a look at prospects who helped themselves during their team's bowl game to end the college season. The bowl season puts a lot of prospects under the mircoscope with some teams sending multiple scouts for each game while also doing cross-checks into different regions. Their statistics in the games are not taken into account when looking at their tools for the NFL.

Quarterbacks

Previous column:

Oregon's Joey Harrington made a huge statement with his game against Colorado. He has the tools and moxie to be a very solid pro quarterback, but many teams were divided on him due to inconsistencies in previous games. He looked very sharp and had a great rhythm against Colorado. His accuracy in the short and downfield game were excellent. The only thing that concerned me was his continued habit of locking onto his primary receiver too often. If Harrington can follow up his performance with a solid all-star performance and good workouts, his stock could rise significantly in the first round. Fresno State's David Carr had another solid performance against Michigan State. He looked very poised and showed good command again, although his low release point remains a concern with some teams. Louisiana State's Rohan Davey had a very good performance against Illinois. Davey displayed good tools again and his command of the passing game has improved. He still needs continued development, but he could become a solid mid-round pick.

Running backs

Michigan State's T.J. Duckett had a big day against Fresno State. He continued to run with good toughness and vision inside while showing enough with his feet to make adjustments in the hole, but he showed scouts who haven't seen much of him that he can break some longer runs because he picks up steam in the open field and is tough to tackle. He looks like a solid first-round pick. Georgia's Verron Haynes continues to build his stock as he had a very solid game against Boston College. Haynes shows good toughness and deceptive power inside, but also has excellent vision to anticipate openings to string out some solid runs. In the right system, Haynes could be a steady guy who keeps the chains moving on the ground and in the passing game. It won't be a surprise if he goes in the second round.

Wide Receivers

Louisiana State's Josh Reed continues to grow on myself and many others. While many people are interested in seeing what type of track speed he possesses, there's no question he's a solid football player. He runs excellent routes and knows how to set up defenders. He's a definite playmaker within the intermediate areas. Pittsburgh's Antonio Bryant had a very good outing against North Carolina State before Christmas to improve his imagine for scouts who saw him earlier in the year. Bryant shows the ability to make a lot of plays downfield with his rangy frame and ball skills. Another prospect who did some nice things was Louisville's Deion Branch against Brigham Young. Although Branch isn't a top prospect because he lacks ideal size and speed, he should be a solid NFL receiver as either a possible second or third guy on some teams. He runs good routes, shows a good feel for the game, and displays the toughness to do dirty work. He could be a solid mid-round pick.

Tight Ends

Miami's Jeremy Shockey had a huge game against Nebraska as he displayed what he can do in the passing game. He shows a natural feel with his routes and catches the ball very well. He still needs more consistency as a blocker, but he's willing to improve. He could be a first-round pick depending on how he works out for scouts this spring. He'll be a very good NFL tight end. Washington's Jerramy Stevens was near 100 percent healthy against Texas after suffering a broken foot last fall. He was very active in the passing game. He does a good job using his size to shield defenders from the ball, but shows flashes of good movement skills for his size. But his blocking was still erratic in the bowl game. He locks on with his hands, but doesn't get much leverage nor does he use his lower body. With his massive frame and athletic ability, he could be an impact player if he wants to put in the time.

Offensive Lineman

Colorado's Victor Rogers has made some strides over the latter half of his senior year. Against Oregon, Rogers showed flashes of becoming a very solid right tackle prospect. He was being more assertive with his hands and using his lower body more efficiently to get movement in the run game. But he still can be erratic too often, so he needs continued development. Some teams have graded him as a potential third rounder.

Defensive Tackles

Tennessee's John Henderson may have redeemed himself against Michigan with a dominant outing. There's no question he's heard that his stock dropped a few spots with some teams, but more importantly, he had a chance to rest his ankle and looked like the Henderson we saw last season. He displayed excellent quickness and did a great job coming off blocks to make a lot of plays. North Carolina's Ryan Sims had a very productive game against Auburn. He showed a good first step off the ball and made a lot of plays in the backfield. He may have solidified his stock as a mid-first rounder. Washington's Larry Tripplett had one of his better games of the year against Texas. He's had a lot of trouble getting off blocks to make plays this season, but he had a chance to shoot gaps with his quickness and make plays in the backfield and down the line of scrimmage. His stock will vary among teams on draft day. He could work back into the late first round.

Defensive Ends

North Carolina's Julius Peppers did some very strong things against Auburn. He was locating the ball well and showed solid lateral range to chase down plays in pursuit. Importantly, he also did a very good job of using his strength to get off blocks. Tennessee's Will Overstreet was slowed by injuries this season, but he's done some good things on the field when he played. He's shown the same intelligence and effort on the field as last season, but has shown very deceptive feet and closing quickness.

Linebacker

Michigan's Larry Foote had a very solid outing against Tennessee and has solidified his stock as a potential second- or third-round pick. He located the ball well against the run and made plays while showing a good feel in pass coverage.

Safety

Oklahoma's Roy Williams continued to perform like an impact player against Arkansas. He was around the ball a lot and was freed up to attack the line of scrimmage often. He displayed very good burst and ability to change directions well for his size. He does an excellent job closing on the ball.
