CAMPUS HEROES: 10,000 men of Harvard

When you trace the history of athletics in America, it's hard to avoid references to Harvard and its bitter archrival Yale. Here's a brief timeline ...
  • Way back in 1780, athletic competition among Harvard students begins when a group of sophomores issue a challenge to members of the freshman class for a wrestling match. Afterward, the winners are treated to dinner by the vanquished.
  • In 1827, a poem entitled "The Battle of the Delta" is published. It refers to an annual "foot-ball" match between the college's freshmen and sophomores played on the Delta, where Harvard's Memorial Hall now stands.
  • On Aug. 3, 1852, college athletics are born when Harvard and Yale meet in America's first intercollegiate athletic event -- a crew race on Lake Winnipesaukee in Center Harbor, N.H. Fast forward a century and a half to Saturday, which may not rank up there with that day when "the winners of the freshmen vs. sophomores wrestling match were treated to dinner by the vanquished," but it's close. For the first time since 1913, the Harvard gridders (we're going for an old school feel here) finished the season with a perfect record. That's all well and good, but the Crimson beat Yale, which is huge, and the real meat and potatoes of this "Campus Heroes" meal. In the nation's third-longest-running college football rivalry (behind just Lehigh-Lafayette, which we'll get to later, and Princeton-Yale), Yale had beaten Harvard the previous three times. And not since World War II had one school won more than three in a row in the series. So, in other words, Harvard was due. With Crimson quarterback Neil Rose's four touchdown passes, Harvard beat Yale 35-23. Rose's effort helped him establish a new school record for career touchdown passes. Rose has 33, which bested the 30 set by Tom Yohe in 1989. Thousands of crimson and white bedecked fans -- probably humming to that catchy tune of "10,000 men of Harvard" -- rushed the Yale Bowl field in the final seconds. "Anything beyond this -- the Harvard-Yale game -- is really anticlimatic," Harvard coach said. "Fifty-thousand to watch a championship football game ... the end to a perfect season."

    Oldest of the old

Lehigh could probably associate with the glee experienced by the Crimson of Harvard. Lehigh, in vanquishing its archrivals -- Lafayette -- secured a spot in the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs. Talk about old school, Lehigh and Lafayette have met 137 times (137 times!?! Geez, they've been playing foot-ball that long?), which is the -- by a good solid 13 games -- longest-running rivalry in college football (Princeton-Yale is at 124 games and Harvard-Yale is at 118 games).

    City championship

If at first you don't succeed ... That was the rallying cry for the University of sideline fun bunch as the final seconds ticked off the game clock at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum on Saturday. After somehow missing first-year Trojan coach Pete Carroll with their first attempt to douse him with a Gatorade bucket, those cardinal and gold-clad crazies tried again and scored a hit with the second Gatorade bucket. The mood was a bit more somber on the opposite sideline as the Bruins wallowed in a 27-0 humbling, which was their fourth straight defeat after opening the season 6-0. Just a month ago, had visions of a Rose Bowl berth. Now, will go to a bowl game most casual football fans have never heard of. Making matters worse, allowed its cross-town rivals to build its season record to 6-5, which ensures the Trojans of a bowl berth.

    More rivalry fun

  • With his team's 31-7 upset of No. 17 , coach Dennis Franchione became only the third coach to win the Iron Bowl -- the yearly -Alabama grudge match -- in his first try since 1948, joining 's Gene Stallings (1990) and 's Terry Bowden (1993). He was rewarded with a huge cheer by 's fans, pumping his fists in the air as he headed for the locker room.
  • Cal may be 0-10 and downtrodden, but one wouldn't have been able to tell by the way they came to play against Stanford in the renewal of the "Big Game." In winning its seventh straight "Big Game," Stanford beat a very game Cal team 35-28.

    Not-so-special teams

  • With two minutes left in the -Michigan showdown, there was much glee at Madison's Big Ten Pub and other favorite local watering holes, as appeared on its way to its first victory over Michigan since 1994. That was until missed a 36-yard field goal with 1:26 left. Then the Wolverines recovered the ball again after a punt bounced off 's leg and was recovered by at the 13 with 14 seconds left. Hayden Epstein kicked a 31-yard field goal to give Michigan a 20-17 victory and a chance at the Big Ten title and the conference's BCS bowl bid in its game against next week.

    Warm up the bus!

Whether it was Division I football or the Division III variety, there were plenty of lopsided contests Saturday. In addition to that USC-UCLA blowout that sent the Bruin faithful back to Westwood long before the final snap, here were some more of those one-sided affairs ...
  • 's ran for 185 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Cyclones over 49-7. Talk about your home-field disadvantage. This game was played in Lawrence, Kan.
  • Heisman hopeful of Miami (Fla.) threw four touchdown passes in the No. 1 Hurricanes' 59-0 victory over .
  • David Carr of passed for 368 yards and four touchdowns in a 61-14 victory over .
  • Jeff Kelly of threw for 400 yards and three touchdowns in a 59-6 rout of .
  • Western ' Sam Clemons passed for 472 yards and five touchdowns in a 52-15 victory over State.
  • Josh Rue of Duquesne ran for 317 yards and four touchdowns as the Dukes beat Canisius 63-15.
  • Mike Warker completed 13 of 15 pass attempts for 337 yards and three touchdowns, all in the first half, as second-ranked Widener beat Christopher Newport 56-7 in Division III NCAA first round playoff action.
  • In the "Pick on somebody your own size" category ... broke the career passing yardage record, throwing for 281 yards and three touchdowns as the Beavers routed Division I-AA Northern 45-10 Saturday.

    Losing ugly

, which finished its conference slate 0-7 after losing to 38-7 Saturday, set a Big East record for fewest points scored, with 36. The Scarlet Knights, who have lost 22 of their last 23 conference games, allowed 325 points to conference foes this season, losing by an average score of 46-5. Ugh!
