Last Week: W, Georgia 49-31 Next Up: at Alabama (Nov. 26) Why Auburn Should Be No. 1: Turning a deaf ear to the Cam Newton saga, the Tigers battled back from an early 21-7 deficit to escape the Bulldogs. Few have stopped the offense, which continues to lead the SEC in scoring by a wide margin. Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: The defense remains ordinary, getting burned for three touchdown passes by Georgia's Aaron Murray. Auburn has the SEC's No. 8 defense, and if anyone can slow down the offense for a few drives, it might be uh-oh time. Oh yeah, and there's that wee little distraction still swirling. Last Week: W, California 15-13 Next Up: Arizona (Nov. 26) Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: For the first time all year, the Ducks won a tight game when the offense didn't shoulder the load. The defense and special teams were outstanding, holding Cal to 69 yards passing and getting punt return for a touchdown out of Cliff Harris. Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: Has the curtain been pulled back on the Quack Attack? LaMichael James and Darron Thomas were ordinary, producing just one offensive score, which was also the only play over 25 yards. The offense has struggled this year when it has had to face a real defense. Collapse Description

Last Week: W, Indiana 83-20 Next Up: at Michigan Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: The Badgers have absolutely caught fire, winning five straight, including wins over Ohio State and Iowa. Their only loss is at one-loss Michigan State, and backups Montee Ball and James White have done a sensational job since star RB John Clay got hurt. The offensive line is dominating. Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: It's hard to find much fault in Wisconsin these days, especially after it slapped 83 points on Indiana. The defense did show some softness in October, especially against quality quarterbacks. The secondary is still suspect. Collapse Description

Last Week: W, Idaho 52-14 Next Up: Fresno State Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: The Broncos went on the road to play an in-state rival and were never tested. Despite being heavily favored week after week, Boise State never lets its guard down, winning the last six by no fewer than four touchdowns. Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: With Boise State it has always been about the schedule and not the performance on the field. The team has faced one opponent that's currently ranked, and that was all the way back on Labor Day night. The Oregon State win now is meaningless. Collapse Description

Last Week: W, San Diego State 40-35 Next Up: at New Mexico (Nov. 27) Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: Even without a healthy Ed Wesley at running back, the Frogs put up 40 points for a third straight game and seventh time this season. Looking like the Mountain West's version of Wisconsin, they got 100-yard games from backups Matthew Tucker and Waymon James. Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: The real version of Wisconsin might be better. The aura of invincibility was stripped from the TCU defense. Entering the weekend allowing a nation's-low eight points a game, it yielded four offensive touchdowns to San Diego State and darn near blew this game late in the final quarter. Collapse Description

Last Week: W, Penn State 38-14 Next Up: at Iowa Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: The Buckeyes shook off a slow start to score the last five touchdowns, three from the offense and two from the defense. They've played increasingly well since their only loss at 9-1 Wisconsin a month ago. Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: If you want to get picky with an Ohio State team that's playing extremely well, it could stand to get to the quarterback with more frequency. The Buckeyes failed to get to Matt McGloin, and have only 16 sacks in 10 games. Collapse Description

Last Week: W, Louisiana-Monroe 51-0 Next Up: Ole Miss Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: As expected, the Tigers took care of business against an inferior opponent, creating five turnovers, scoring two defensive touchdowns, and getting plenty of work for the backups. They've only lost to unbeaten Auburn, 24-17, and knocked off Alabama a week ago. Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: Oh, that offense. A problem all season long, even a visit from the Warhawks couldn't kickstart the attack. LSU got absolutely nothing going through the air and was abysmal at converting third downs. Last Week: W, Mississippi State 30-10 Next Up: Georgia State Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: Behind an air-tight D, the Tide snapped Mississippi State's six-game winning streak with relative ease. Its only losses have come on the road at South Carolina and LSU, two ranked teams. Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: The running game remains a mystery in Tuscaloosa. Trent Richardson was a scratch this past weekend and Mark Ingram was only able to muster 53 yards on 18 carries. Collapse Description

Last Week: W, Arkansas 58-21 Next Up: at Mississippi State Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: The Razorbacks have now won four straight behind the passing of Ryan Mallett and running of Knile Davis. Bobby Petrino's offense has been on fire, ringing up at least 38 points in each of the last five games. Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: Although there isn't a ton to complain about in Fayetteville these days, the defense can still be a little iffy, especially against quality ground games. That issue could surface in the final two games with Mississippi State and LSU. Collapse Description

Last Week: W, Arizona State 17-13 Next Up: at Cal Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: The Cardinal moved another step closer to at-large BCS bowl contention with its fifth consecutive win. On a night when the offense struggled to get in the end zone, the defense rose up and shut down the Sun Devil offense. Last Week: W, Kansas 20-3 Next Up: at Texas A&M Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: The Huskers have bounced back with four wins since the Oct. 16 loss at Texas to put the Big 12 North in a vice grip. The D arguably delivered its best effort of the season, holding Kansas to a field goal, four first downs, and less than 100 yards of total offense. Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: In order for Nebraska to reach its full potential, it has to get QB Taylor Martinez back to full strength. As the last couple of weeks have proven, the offense isn't remotely as effective when the redshirt freshman isn't able to perform his magic with his feet. The offense now has to turn it on over the final few weeks. Collapse Description

Last Week: W, Texas 33-16 Next Up: at Kansas Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: The Cowboys moved a step closer to the Big 12 championship game, blowing out Texas for a third straight double-digit win. The trio of QB Brandon Weeden, RB Kendall Hunter, and WR Justin Blackmon is as good as any in the country. Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: While much better of late, the Oklahoma State defense can still be sporadic, as evidenced by the 51-41 loss to Nebraska on Oct. 23. The unit ranks 111th nationally in pass defense. Collapse Description

Last Week: W, Kansas State 38-28 Next Up: at Iowa State Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: The Tigers are back on track after losing two games, having an easy time at home with a pretty good Kansas State team. This game was at 38-14 before the Wildcats scored a couple of meaningless late scores. Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: Even after scoring 38 points, the Mizzou offense has not looked quite right. It only produced 17 points in the back-to-back losses, and needed four turnovers and a defensive score to get the attack humming. The run defense had problems yet again. Collapse Description

Last Week: W, Baylor 42-30 Next Up: Nebraska Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: It's been years since the Aggies have been this hot, rallying in Waco to win a fourth straight game. The offense has been cruising ever since Ryan Tannehill moved behind center, scoring at least 33 points in each game during the streak. Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: Saturday's win was further evidence that the Texas A&M D is a question mark. It gave up more than 500 total yards and got trucked on the ground by QB Robert Griffin and RB Jay Finley. Collapse Description

Last Week: W, Texas Tech 45-7 Next Up: at Baylor Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: The Sooners recovered from last week's loss in College Station about as well as could be expected, out gaining Texas Tech 562-326. The Landry Jones to Ryan Broyles connection hooked up three times in the end zone and has now done so 11 times in 2010. Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: Oklahoma remains maddeningly inconsistent, especially on the road, where it has lost its last two and darn near fell at Cincinnati in September. Line play, in particular, has been erratic since opening day. Collapse Description

Last Week: W, North Carolina 26-10 Next Up: at Miami Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: The Hokies' winning streak has reached eight games, with the last two coming over Georgia Tech and North Carolina in Chapel Hill. The defense was the story on Saturday, creating five takeaways and keeping the Heels out of the end zone over the game's final 51 minutes. Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: Tech has got to do a better job of converting in the red zone than it did this past weekend. The game with Carolina would have been out of reach a lot earlier had Chris Hazley not attempted four field goals. Collapse Description

The No. 22-ranked running game was outstanding, getting 160 yards from Marc Tyler. Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: The pass defense isn't going to be fixed until 2011 ... at least. Even with star WR Juron Criner at less than 100 percent, they torched the Trojans for 353 yards and three touchdowns. They're also among the nation's leaders in turnover margin and run D. Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: This ranking is a gift and the team is only here because of the Michigan State win. Last Week: Did Not Play Next Up: Purdue Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: The Spartans are tied for first place in the Big Ten and are one of the last remaining of the dwindling one-loss programs. They've got quality wins over Wisconsin and Illinois, and have outscored opponents by an average of 31-19. Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: Of those one-loss schools, Michigan State has one of the worst defeats on the resume, a 37-6 drubbing at the hands of Iowa three weeks ago.
