Ahhh, rivalry games. So significant they are in determining a team's finish in a conference, BCS ranking or bowl berth. There are also the ensuing bragging rights. Whether it's an in-state or intersectional rivalry, the tally marks on these games' trophies are an indelible part of history for future generations to gloatingly reminisce over or try to painfully forget via revenge. These 13 match-ups are great traditions, and always will be, but what have they done for us lately? -- LISA HORNE

NOTE: Grades are based on recent games only

CFB 24 760 Grading the top college football rivalries 21994572 Auburn vs. Alabama (Nov. 26) Auburn+vs.+Alabama+%28Nov.+26%29 CFB

They've played this game off and on since 1893 — continuously since 1948 — and 2010 will mark the 75th meeting between these two teams. Alabama holds a 40-33-1 overall record, but Auburn has won seven of the last 10 contests. The Iron Bowl has been closely contested recently — in the last seven years, only two games have had double-digit margins of victory. Auburn and Alabama together have represented the SEC West in 10 of the 18 SEC Championships (and Auburn will make it 11 of 19 later this year), which means this is a truly great rivalry that can back up all the hype behind it. Grade: A+

CFB 24 760 Grading the top college football rivalries 21998303 BYU vs. Utah (Nov. 27) BYU+vs.+Utah+%28Nov.+27%29 CFB

BYU and Utah battle in The Holy War every year, and invariably the Las Vegas Bowl (No. 1 MWC team gets automatic berth) or Poinsettia Bowl (No. 2 MWC gets automatic berth) is on the line for one of these teams. BYU has played for five consecutive years in the Las Vegas Bowl, while Utah has played in the Poinsettia Bowl two of the last three years. The Holy War has lived up to the hype: Except for a 2008 beat down by Utah, there have been two overtime games and no margin of victory greater than seven points in the last five years. Grade: A

The Red River Rivalry has been a monster rivalry game for several reasons — not the least of which is that it often decides who will represent the South division in the Big 12 Championship game, with that winner getting an automatic BCS Bowl berth. How important is this game? In the last seven years, the winner of the Red River Rivalry has played in five BCS title games, with Nebraska being the only other Big 12 team to play (in 2002) for the BCS title. The last two games have been decided by eight or less points, and in 2005, No. 1 Oklahoma beat No. 5 Texas in a 45-35 thriller. Sure the Big 12 champ hasn't performed well in past BCS title games, but that doesn’t mean this series still doesn't bring it to the table. It does. Grade: A

CFB 24 760 Grading the top college football rivalries 22083358 Oregon vs. Oregon State (Dec. 4) Oregon+vs.+Oregon+State+%28Dec.+4%29 CFB

The Civil War has heated up big-time. In the last two games, the Ducks and Beavers combined for over 2,000 total yards. This year's contest could decide whether or not the Ducks go to Pasadena or Glendale in January. Last season, the Oregon Ducks went to the Rose Bowl after defeating at-the-time No. 13 Oregon State, 37-33. The Beavers have been ranked in the top 20 for the last two years before facing the also-ranked Ducks, and while the Beavers aren't ranked this year, they do face the prospect of being the BCS title-game spoiler for the No. 1 Ducks. Who knew the state of Oregon could provide such epic battles? Grade: B+ and climbing.

This rivalry has had so many great games, some of them actually have nicknames; Wide Right I, Wide Right II, Wide Right III and Wide Left. But to really understand how great these games have been, one only needs to peruse the final scores of the Miami-Florida State games since both teams became ACC rivals in 2004; 16-10 (OT), 10-7, 13-10, 37-29, 41-39, 38-34 and 45-7. Three of those games were nail-biters and the last four games have averaged 67.5 total points scored. If we could get a Wide Left II, their grade will go up next year. Grade: A-

CFB 24 760 Grading the top college football rivalries 21990437 Clemson vs. South Carolina (Nov. 27) Clemson+vs.+South+Carolina+%28Nov.+27%29 CFB

"The Battle of the Palmetto State" is a doozy — it's the longest-running series in the South. The Gamecocks, like Clemson, have seemingly been on the verge of having a BCS-worthy season every year, but have lost some heartbreakers that prevented them from BCS bowling. From 2005-07, the margin of victory had been no greater than four points, but the last two have been blowouts, with Clemson beating South Carolina 31-14 in 2008, and South Carolina returning the favor last year, 34-17. The fact that these teams haven't had a recent January bowl invite is disappointing as well. Grade: B-

CFB 24 760 Grading the top college football rivalries 21998306 Stanford vs. Cal (Nov. 20) Stanford+vs.+Cal+%28Nov.+20%29 CFB

This series has had some thrilling moments, perhaps none bigger than the 1982 game that featured the greatest play in college football, called simply, "The Play." Has the series lived up to the excitement since then? Not really. Stanford has lost four of the last five contests and hasn't played in the Rose Bowl game since 2000. Cal hasn't played in Pasadena on Jan. 1 since 1959, albeit some controversial voting in 2004 kept that 51-year futility streak alive. "The Big Game" hasn't been so big and right now is just a venue for bragging rights for over-achievers in the Bay Area. Grade: C

CFB 24 760 Grading the top college football rivalries 22005035 Ohio State vs. Michigan (Nov. 27) Ohio+State+vs.+Michigan+%28Nov.+27%29 CFB

The Michigan and Ohio State rivalry has a storied past, but lately it hasn't left college football fans rapt at attention. The Buckeyes have won 9 of the last 12 games and have a six-game winning streak over the Wolverines including a cumulative 77-20 score from the last three games. This year will be the four-year anniversary of the 42-39 Ohio State victory over Michigan, a game that actually left us debating the merits of a rematch of those same two teams in the BCS title game. If they can deliver another donnybrook like that 2006 game, this rivalry game will restore natural order in college football. Until then, it's all Buckeyes. Grade: C

Ever since Urban Meyer came to Gainesville, the (Unofficial) World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party has been more like a Punch Bowl — it's simply a foregone conclusion that the Gators will win. The Gators have lost exactly three times in the past 20 years, with their last loss in the 2007 "Gator Stomp" game, a spirited contest in which the Bulldogs drew two penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct after storming the Gators' end zone after the Bulldogs' first touchdown. This year's game went into OT, but because both teams are having a down year, the game didn't have the usual build-up. Still, overtime is an improvement over some recent Gator blowouts. Grade: C

CFB 24 760 Grading the top college football rivalries 21994576 USC vs. UCLA (Dec. 4) USC+vs.+UCLA+%28Dec.+4%29 CFB

The Trojans have won 10 of the last 11 games against the Bruins, but two wins were vacated due to USC using an ineligible player (Reggie Bush). For the most part, there have usually been major bowl implications before the games were played, but last year was the first time since 2001 that neither USC nor UCLA had a major bowl berth on the line. This year, USC is ineligible for postseason play and UCLA (4-5) has to win at least two of its three remaining games to be bowl eligible. For the second straight year, nothing's on the line and the rivalry has lost some luster. Grade: C-

CFB 24 760 Grading the top college football rivalries 21994577 Army vs. Navy (Dec. 11) Army+vs.+Navy+%28Dec.+11%29 CFB

Navy has beaten Army eight straight years and in the last three of those contests, Army scored a total of six points. While this game is undoubtedly one of the best college football rivalries and the gold standard for excellence in sportsmanship and traditions, it's also been a real dud in terms of compelling drama on the field. Army's offense has been dismal since 2007, losing 38-3, 34-0 and 17-3. This year, Army has a good shot at ending the Midshipmen's eight-game winning streak, but even if the Black Knights don't win, we'll continue to embrace the spectacle of this rivalry in the forefront. CFB 24 760 Grading the top college football rivalries 22083359 USC vs. Notre Dame (Nov. 27) USC+vs.+Notre+Dame+%28Nov.+27%29 CFB

The road to the national championship used to go through South Bend, but for the past eight years, the Fighting Irish have been stymied by the Trojans. Each team has had several decades of dominance over the other and the Irish currently hold the overall lead in the series. This year's game will be a rarity: Notre Dame and USC will be coached by first-year head coaches in Brian Kelly and Lane Kiffin, respectively, and both teams are not ranked in the Top 25. This game won't mean a thing to the sanctioned Trojans (in terms of bowl possibilities) except for more chest-thumping, but Notre Dame will become bowl eligible with a win over Army or USC. Is this what it has come down to? Grade: D
