The race between Mark Ingram and Toby Gerhart came down to 22 votes. This race was unbelievably close to call. Both Ingram and Gerhart turned in excellent statistical seasons. Ingram’s 2009 season was definitely deserving of a Heisman Trophy, as he rushed for 1,658 yards and 18 touchdowns — good enough to set an Alabama single-season record. The runner-up to Ingram, Toby Gerhart also treated college football fans to a special season. Not to be outdone, Gerhart also broke the single-season rushing record at Stanford with 1,871 yards and 28 touchdowns.

Bo Jackson entered the season as the favorite to win the Heisman but wound up facing stiff competition from Iowa quarterback Chuck Long. Jackson needed every bit of his record-setting 1,786 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns to edge Long in the second-closest race in the last 30 years. Long competed admirably for the prize, throwing for 2,978 yards and 15 touchdowns. Jackson took home the award thanks to a slim 45-vote advantage.

QB Eric Crouch stunned college football followers in 2001, racking up yards through the air and on the ground for Nebraska. Crouch rushed for 1,115 yards and 18 touchdowns while passing for 1,510 yards and 7 touchdowns. Florida's Rex Grossman came in second in the voting with 3,896 passing yards and 34 touchdowns. The vote between the two was close with Crouch declared the winner by a 62-vote margin.

As a junior at Houston, Andre Ware threw for almost 5,000 yards and 44 touchdowns. Anthony Thompson, the running back at Indiana, rushed for a little less than 1,800 yards with 24 touchdowns. The stats put up by these two made the Heisman a nail-biter, decided by just 70 votes. In the end, Ware won out and became the first African-American quarterback to win the Heisman Trophy.

Weinke had a monster season throwing the ball with 4,167 yards — more than any other quarterback in the country. He added 33 touchdowns to his résumé while only throwing 11 interceptions. Weinke’s closest competition was Oklahoma’s Josh Heupel, who threw for 3,172 yards of his own. He was also intercepted just 11 times, but threw 15 fewer touchdowns than Weinke, finishing with 18. At the time, this vote was the third-closest in Heisman history, with Weinke topping Heupel by just 76 votes.

Just 122 votes determined the margin of victory for Sam Bradford over Colt McCoy. Bradford threw the ball all over the field for the Oklahoma Sooners in 2008. Just a sophomore, he threw for more than 4,700 yards and 50 touchdowns with only 8 interceptions. McCoy was also a prolific passer for the Texas Longhorns, compiling more than 3,850 passing yards and 34 touchdowns.

Texas A&M freshman quarterback Johnny Manziel won over Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o with 2,029 points to Te’o’s 1,706, a differential of 323 points. Manziel became the first freshman to ever win the Heisman, while Te’o received the most votes of any purely defensive player in the award’s 78-year history.

Jason White capped off the Sooners’ 2003 undefeated season with a Heisman, beating out Pittsburgh’s Larry Fitzgerald. White passed for more than 3,800 yards and a whopping 40 touchdowns. Fitzgerald stood out at wide receiver, catching 87 passes for 1,595 yards and 22 touchdowns. Despite dominating their respective positions, White’s total number of Heisman votes bested Fitzgerald by 128 — not a large margin at all considering White totaled 1,481 votes and Fitzgerald totaled 1,353.

Danny Wuerffel captured the Heisman after the 1996 campaign which saw the Florida QB throw for 3,625 yards and 39 touchdowns against 13 interceptions. After coming in third in the voting for the 1995 Heisman, Wuerffel topped Iowa State’s running back Troy Davis in the voting. Davis rushed for over 2,000 yards for the second consecutive season to put himself at the top of the Heisman list but voters chose Wuerffel by a margin of 189 votes.

Carson Palmer brought the Heisman back to USC after a 21-year drought. He threw for 3,639 yards and 32 touchdowns with only 10 interceptions while runner up Brad Banks of Iowa racked up 2,369 yards passing and threw for 25 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. Palmer won by a margin of 233 votes. Incidentally, the Trojans crushed the Hawkeyes 38-17 in the Orange Bowl a few weeks after the Heisman ceremony.

Tim Tebow’s 2007 season was Heisman worthy. As the sophomore quarterback for the Florida Gators, Tebow passed for 3,286 yards and 32 touchdowns against just 6 interceptions. Tebow made history winning the Heisman over Arkansas running back Darren McFadden, becoming the first sophomore to win the Heisman in the award’s history. Tebow amassed 254 more votes than McFadden to clinch the Heisman.
