When Tommy Tuberville (left) accepted the head-coaching role at Cincinnati on Dec. 8, it left the Red Raiders' position open ... but not for long. Texas Tech didn't have to look far to find Tuberville's replacement.

Willie Taggart (far left) was introduced as the new head man at South Florida on Dec. 8, after leading WKU to its greatest season in the FBS. The Hilltoppers are 7-5 this season and will play in their first bowl game, the Little Caesars Bowl, on Dec. 26 against Central Michigan. For Taggart, the USF gig was the reward for a tremendous turnaround — after a 2-10 record in his first season at Western Kentucky, he guided his program to consecutive 7-5 campaigns. But his leaving was only the beginning . . .

That's because on Dec. 10, Western Kentucky announced Taggart's replacement would be none other than Bobby Petrino — the coach who infamously was fired from Arkansas in the spring after a motorcycle accident led to the revelation of an affair about which he lied to his employers (and who infamously quit the Atlanta Falcons during the season, and who infamously talked to Auburn about the coaching job while his former boss, Tommy Tuberville, was still employed by the school).

CFB 24 43 FBS coaches fired and hired in the 2012 season 31466121 NC State Wolfpack NC+State+Wolfpack CFB

Tom O'Brien (left) had a 40-35 record in six seasons at NC State, including four bowl bids. But he never really got the Wolfpack out of the second tier of the Atlantic Coast Conference and was dismissed Nov. 25 after a 7-5 regular season. In a statement after his firing, O'Brien, 64, said he is looking forward to life after football.

On Dec. 1, NC State hired Northern Illinois coach Dave Doeren (right) to replace O'Brien. Less than 24 hours after winning the Mid-American Conference title game over Kent State, Doeren was named coach of the Wolfpack. He had served as an assistant coach at Kansas and Wisconsin before NIU, which will face Florida State in the Orange Bowl.

CFB 24 43 FBS coaches fired and hired in the 2012 season 31461060 Idaho Vandals Idaho+Vandals CFB

Idaho fired Robb Akey (left) on Oct. 21, one day after the Vandals gave up 839 yards in a 70-28 loss to Louisiana Tech and dropped to 1-7. Akey was 20-50 at Idaho since taking over in 2007. He had one winning season with the Vandals, going 8-5 in 2009.

On Dec. 3, Idaho hired Arkansas assistant Paul Petrino (right) to replace Akey. Petrino, brother of former Razorbacks head coach Bobby Petrino, served as Arkansas offensive coordinator in 2012 and had coaching stops at Louisville and Illinois.
