After starting the season with a promising 6-0 run, the Fighting Illini took a dive and finished with a 6-6 record. Zook became Illinois’ head coach in 2005 and finished his career there with a 34-51 record that included a 2007 Rose Bowl appearance.

CFB 24 43 College football coaches fired after 2011 season 30417598 Mike Stoops, Arizona Mike+Stoops%2C+Arizona CFB

Unlike the other fired coaches, Stoops didn’t make it to the end of the season. The Wildcats got rid of him in mid-October. During his eight-year, Stoops took the Wildcats to three consecutive bowls, though the third ended in a blowout loss to Oklahoma in 2010. The Wildcats didn't start out very well this season, either, going 1-5 before Stoops’ firing. Defensive coordinator Tim Kish was promoted to interim coach. Then, before the Wildcats’ regular-season finale, the school announced it had hired Rich Rodriguez, formerly of West Virginia and Michigan.

CFB 24 43 College football coaches fired after 2011 season 30420104 Larry Porter, Memphis Larry+Porter%2C+Memphis CFB

Memphis decided two seasons was all it could handle with Larry Porter. The coach left his gig — and his alma mater — with a dismal 3-21 record. Waning interest in the program also had an impact — only an estimated 2,500 showed up for the team's home finale this season.

CFB 24 43 College football coaches fired after 2011 season 30420081 Turner Gill, Kansas Turner+Gill%2C+Kansas CFB

Kansas fired Gill after only two seasons at the helm. The move came after the Jayhawks capped a 2-10 season with a loss to Missourii. During his short tenure, Fickell’s "interim" tag was never removed but was given a high-ranking position on Meyer's defensive staff.

CFB 24 43 College football coaches fired after 2011 season 30415003 Dennis Erickson, Arizona State Dennis+Erickson%2C+Arizona+State CFB

Erickson had a 31-30 record in his five seasons with the Sun Devils. After starting the 2011 season with a 6-2 record, Arizona State stumbled through the rest of its schedule, including a four-game losing streak to conclude the season. In his first season, the Sun Devils went 10-3 and made an appearance in the Holiday Bowl, but they haven't made a bowl appearance since.

CFB 24 43 College football coaches fired after 2011 season 30440091 Steve Fairchild, Colorado State Steve+Fairchild%2C+Colorado+State CFB

After four seasons at Fort Collins, Fairchild was shown the door on Dec. 4. The Rams ended the season on an eight-game losing streak, giving Fairchild his third consecutive 3-9 mark at the school. Don't accuse new athletic director Jack Graham of not aiming high when it comes to a replacement, as Graham announced after the firing that a national search for the next head coach would begin immediately.

After 15 seasons of running the Bulldogs, Hill was fired on Dec. 4, a day after Fresno State lost to San Diego State to complete a 4-9 campaign. Hill led his teams to success in the early part of his tenure, and built his program into one of the most respected of the non-BCS schools. But, beginning with a narrow 50-42 loss to then-No. 1 USC in 2005, Hill's teams went 40-41 over his final 81 games.
