UNC's Marshall will not play vs. Ohio
Seldom-used freshman Stilman White will start in place of Marshall, who fractured a bone in his right wrist in the team's third-round victory over Creighton Sunday.
Head coach Roy Williams had suggested this week there was little chance of his star point guard playing Friday.
Tar Heel fans are hoping the sophomore can be ready to play Sunday in the Elite 8 if the team advances over the 13th-seeded Bobcats.
Marshall, a finalist for the Cousy Award, which is given to the nation's top point guard, underwent surgery Monday morning to have a screw inserted in his wrist.
He has been wearing a temporary brace since having the cast removed.
Marshall said Thursday that doctors told him his wrist was "healing fine" and that the bone was strong. If he were to play, there was no risk of further damage, he said.
Marshall averaged 8.1 points and 9.8 assists this season for the top-seeded Tar Heels.
