Raftery brings hoops enthusiasm
FOX Sports 1, which debuts Aug. 17, made a key move by adding college basketball analyst Bill Raftery to call Big East games. Raftery brings as much *joie de vivre to college hoops as anyone — save perhaps fellow FOX maestro of the mic Gus Johnson. (No disrespect, but that anyone includes Dickie V.)
Raftery brings with him a set of catch phrases as extensive as his knowledge — and is the man behind arguably the greatest live call of a dunk in history. That came in 1988, when Pittsburgh forward Jerome Lane slammed home a fast-break dunk that shattered the backboard. Raftery responded with, well, you know:
But that isn't Raftery's only call; far from it. When somebody hits a particularly gutsy shot, Raftery is known for his penchant for vegetables — particularly “Onions!” We don’t have to explain that to you, do we?
You couldn’t expect Raftery to use a phrase so mundane as being faked out of his jock to refer to a slick move, could you? No, it’s “lingerie on the deck.”
And what’s a bank shot if not a “kiss”?
Plus, if a “kiss” is extra sweet, it can be a “Belgian waffle.”
Kisses and Belgian waffles — makes you look forward to college basketball season, doesn’t it?
*joie de vivre — For the non-French speakers, it means joy of life.
