Fresno State wins on halfcourt shot
The 6-foot-7 senior took a pass from Tyler Johnson with time running down in overtime and the Bulldogs trailing 97-95 after a 3-pointer by UC Irvine's Alex Young.
"I just took off and I went to half court," Huddleston told the Fresno Bee. "I really was going to try to anticipate the foul, so I nudged the guy on the way up and when nothing happened, I proceeded to go up with my motion and I just tried to make sure I had enough arc on the ball. And as soon as I hit the ground, it hit the backboard, went off the front rim and in."
The Bulldogs are coming off two losing seasons that have seen them fall 39 times. So, starting off 2013-14 with a cliffhanger victory was important.
"The first thing in my mind was: Did I get it off in time? But the coaches, they said it was good; it didn't light up until the ball actually hit the backboard," Huddleston said.
"But it's like you're almost ready for it to burst at any point. Are they going to say it's good? Are they going to say it's not good? The anticipation, just waiting and waiting and waiting, and then their coach got upset, he came over and said, 'It's good. It's good. You guys don't need to get too excited.'"
