Hoyas fend off Lipscomb for 70-49 win
D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera scored 17 points and the Georgetown Hoyas opened the second half with a 13-0 run and pulled away from Lipscomb for a 70-49 win on Saturday afternoon.
Joshua Smith had 14 points and Mikael Hopkins scored all of his 13 points in the second half for the Hoyas (4-2), who led by 11 in the first half, but only 27-26 at halftime.
The Bisons (3-4) closed the first half with seven straight points, but Georgetown flipped the momentum immediately after halftime, holding Lipscomb without a point for the first 6 minutes.
The Hoyas opened a four-game homestand with their third straight win despite shooting 7 of 27 from beyond the arc.
Malcolm Smith had 19 points and 10 rebounds, and Martin Smith scored 16 for the Bisons, who continued their trend of alternating wins and losses each game. The Atlantic Sun conference program missed their first eight 3-point attempts and finished 5 of 26.
Georgetown's leading scorer this season, Smith-Rivera scored 12 points in the second half, made 4 of 7 3-point attempts overall and grabbed eight of Georgetown's 48 rebounds.
Georgetown had a considerable size advantage against a Lipscomb squad with no starter taller than 6-foot-5. However, 6-foot-10 Joshua Smith played only 17 minutes due to foul trouble. After receiving three fouls and playing only 7 minutes in the first half, Smith picked up his fourth on a double technical call inside the opening minute of the second half.
Without their low-post presence, Georgetown settled for 3-pointers. The Hoyas made their first two 3-point attempts, but then missed 14 straight. They settled down in the second half and shot 56.5 percent from the field.
Even though the two programs had no prior history, Georgetown is certainly familiar with the Atlantic Sun. The Hoyas suffered their latest surprising NCAA tournament loss against Florida Gulf Coast, a conference foe Lipscomb defeated twice last season.
The Hoyas returned home from the Puerto Rico Tip-Off following wins over Virginia Commonwealth and Kansas State but a loss to Northeastern.
Before tipoff, Georgetown announced junior forward Greg Whittington has been dismissed from the team. Whittington has not played this season following knee surgery this summer. He was the Hoyas' second-leading scorer and rebounder last season before missing the final 19 games due to an academic suspension.
