According to sources close to the situation, Welsh, 49, has resigned three days after being suspended on Friday without pay after being arrested earlier that morning for driving while intoxicated.
Nassau County Police said Welsh was found stopped in his 2006 Lexus around 1 a.m. ET at a green light at an intersection in Levittown, N.Y. He was taken into custody, charged with DWI and arraigned.
Welsh pleaded guilty and will be back in court on May 4.
Welsh was hired about a month ago after spending the past two years as a broadcaster.
Previously, Welsh was the head coach at Providence – where he was 160-143 in 10 seasons.
Welsh signed a five-year deal to replace Tom Pecora, who left to take the head job at Fordham. Hofstra was 19-15 this past season.
