Curry leads James Madison past Hampton 55-49
RICHMOND, Va. (AP)
Ron Curry scored 20 points and Andrey Semenov scored all eight of his points in the second half Saturday, leading James Madison to a 55-49 victory against Hampton in the opening game of a Governor's Holiday Hoops Classic doubleheader at the Richmond Coliseum.
The Dukes (4-9), losers in seven of their previous eight games, finally took command in a sloppy, back-and-forth matinee with a 9-3 run after the Pirates had pulled within 41-39 with 8:25 remaining.
Brian Darden scored 14 points to lead Hampton (5-7), which got to within 52-49 on consecutive baskets by Emmanuel Okoroba and Du'Vaughn Maxwell, the latter with 1:05 to play, but Curry made a tough basket in traffic for the Dukes with about 33 seconds remaining and the Pirates' threat was finished.
Ke'Ron Brown added 12 points and eight rebounds and Maxwell scored 10 for the Pirates.
A free throw by Charles Cooke and Curry's jumper with 14:49 gave James Madison the lead to stay, but the Pirates kept it close until Semenov's 3-pointer from the top of the key sparked the winning burst.
Taylor Bessick followed with a basket, and after Brown's putback and a free throw by Deron Powers for Hampton, Bessick hit two free throws and Semenov scored on a drive to make it 50-42 with 3:58 left.
Darden's 3-pointer with 2:43 left was his fourth of the game, but the first field goal for Hampton in nearly four minutes. Curry countered with two free throws and the Dukes were able to hang on.
The Dukes shot 50 percent (10-20) in the first half compared to just 27.6 percent (8-29) for the Pirates, but Hampton won the rebounding battle 18-14 and scored 10 points off offensive rebounds.
James Madison also was sloppy with the ball, and its 11 turnovers led to 10 Hampton points.
Curry led all scorers in the half with 10 points for James Madison.
