I have been trying to reproduce this on dog toys in my living room for five minutes now and can’t seem to get it down:
That’s Rice kicker Chris Boswell pulling off one of the slickest onside kicks you’ll see all year, and saving it for crosstown rival Houston.
He takes about three-and-a-half steps, looking like he’s kicking it to the left before poking it the other direction with his back foot. Because there is some justice in the world, Rice recovered.
Boswell’s tricky kick gave the Owls a chance to steal the game in the final two minutes, but that drive failed and Houston held on to win 31-26.
Boswell is no slouch. He set a Rice record with 23 made field goals a season ago, tied for sixth nationally. According to his bio page on the Rice web site, his 11 career field goals from 50 yards or longer are nearly triple the total of the next highest returning kicker this season — Aaron Jones of Baylor, who has four.
We’re willing to bet he now has the school record for successful off-foot reverse onside kicks too.
