Urban Meyer explains why he strongly opposes an early signing period

For years, I've been of the mind that an early signing period would do more harm than good in college football. The biggest thing it would spark, in my opinion, is even more of a rush for coaches to push up the recruiting process because they can't help themselves in their thirst to try and leverage out their competition. And it would come at the expense of the recruits, since the process would speed up and fewer coaching staffs would know about the kind of athlete -- and student -- they were recruiting.

On Monday, Ohio State coach Urban Meyer laid out a pretty strong argument against any early signing period.

"I still can't believe we're having this conversation," Meyer said at his weekly press conference, adding that he "absolutely opposes" any early signing period.

Meyer has a close personal example of why college football recruiting can be so tricky because of how teenagers' bodies develop. Meyer said his son, Nate, a high school receiver, has added 20 pounds in the past six months.

Meyer's Buckeyes incidentally have the nation's No. 1 ranked recruiting class with six five-star commits, according to 247Sports.
