Cappelletti robbed of $50 in jewelry

Thieves stole about $50,000 worth of jewelery, as well as football memorabilia, from the California home of former NFL player and Heisman Trophy winner John Cappelletti, authorities said Tuesday.

Jim Amormino, a spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, said investigators believe the Laguna Niguel home was burglarized on Jan. 20, The Orange County Register reported.

The items stolen included memorabilia from both the 59-year-old’s NFL career with the Los Angeles Rams and San Diego Chargers, and his college days as a running back with Penn State, where he won the school’s only Heisman Trophy, in 1973, and played under Joe Paterno, who died Jan. 22.

Although authorities did not detail the items taken, Cappelletti’s Heisman Trophy was not believed to be among them, as he donated it to Penn State’s All Sports Museum.
