College football weekly news bites: Baker Mayfield arrest video released

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 4:08 p.m. ET

This week's college football news bites feature a follow-up from Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield"s arrest, another player gets arrested for ganja and Steve Spurrier being snarky.

I feel bad for Baker Mayfield. I really do. Everyone does some idiotic things involving alcohol. Unless you went to a Christian college of some sort, you did a number of things that you regret during your college years that were fueled by grain alcohol, peer pressure, and adrenaline. I am not dissing those of you that lived like Mormons during your college years-I respect the heck out of you.

For the rest of us that are, well, normal, alcohol was a large (and dim-witted) part of the college experience. Video has now been released of Baker Mayfield's public intoxication arrest. If you enjoy a cringeworthy viewing experience, here you go.

University of Georgia wideout arrested on marijuana charge. Yeesh. Half of the SEC is going to be incarcerated if this keeps up. UGA wideout Riley Ridley was arrested Saturday night on a misdemeanor marijuana charge, according to the Athens paper, The Red and Black. According to the police department, Ridley had less than an ounce of the green stuff, which is a misdemeanor in Georgia. Ridley was subsequently released on $1,000 bail shortly after midnight. The charge may result in a one-game suspension if the university upholds the rules in the student-athlete handbook. This might mean that Ridley would have to sit out UGA's season opener against Appalachian State.

Steve Spurrier gets snarky. Despite the fact that he isn't coaching college football anymore, Steve Spurrier hasn't lost his unique ability to take fire at other coaches. The target this week? Nick Saban. In an interview with "The Tailgate" radio show in Gainesville, Spurrier commented on Nick Saban winning the Maxwell Coach of the Year award by stating, "Obviously they must have voted before the final game."

The funniest part is that it's technically true, but in true Spurrier style, it also allowed him to throw shade at his former rival. Whether you love Spurrier or hate him, you gotta admit that the guy has taken snark to a whole new level. Kudos, Steve.
