Texas reportedly set to fire Charlie Strong

Charlie Strong's tenure as Texas head coach will be coming to an end soon.

The Austin American-Statesman reported Sunday, citing high-level sources, that Texas officials have decided to fire Strong, who is in his third year in charge of the Longhorns.

Texas is 5-6 on the year and lost to Kansas 24-21 in overtime on Saturday. It was Kansas' first Big 12 win since 2014.

“It will happen for sure. The question is when,” a source told the American-Statesman of Strong's firing.

With Strong expected to hold his weekly press conference Monday morning ahead of Texas' game against TCU on Friday, there was an expectation he will be notified of the decision Sunday night or early Monday morning.

But that logical timeframe might not come to pass, as Texas Athletic Director Mike Perrin sent out this statement Sunday night:

Strong is 16-20 in three years at Texas after a successful 37-15 four-year run at Louisville. Before taking over at Louisville, he was the defensive coordinator for two National Championship teams at Florida.

Strong will be owed the remainder of his contract, which is worth $10.7 million if he is dismissed.

Houston coach Tom Herman is believed to be the top candidate to replace Strong in Austin.
