Like Wiggins, Clowney was a former No. 1 overall prospect in his class by Scout, leading from wire-to-wire in the Class of 2011 rankings, not unlike his wire-to-wire expectation that he’d go No. 1 in the NFL Draft.
While it was the first time that Scout’s former No. 1’s were picked first in their respective class, it had been close in previous drafts.
In 2012, Anthony Davis went No. 1 in the NBA Draft after being the No. 1 overall player in 2011’s recruiting rankings. In the NFL Draft earlier that spring, Trent Richardson went No. 3 in the NFL Draft after being No. 13 overall in the 2009 football rankings and Matt Kalil went right behind him at No. 4 in the NFL Draft after being No. 12 in the 2008 football rankings.
In 2010, John Wall went No. 1 in the NBA Draft after being the No. 2 overall player in the 2009 basketball rankings and Gerald McCoy went No. 3 in the NFL Draft after being No. 4 in the 2006 football rankings.
In 2009, Tyreke Evans went No. 4 in the NBA Draft after being No. 5 overall in the 2008 basketball rankings. That spring, Matthew Stafford went No. 1 overall after being No. 12 in the football rankings while Mark Sanchez went No. 5 after being No. 1 in the 2005 class.
But the 2007 draft’s may have been the best before the 2014 draft’s. Greg Oden and Kevin Durant were 1-2 in the final Scout hoops rankings in the spring of 2006 and went 1-2 in the NBA Draft in June of 2007. On the football side, Adrian Peterson was No. 7 in the NFL Draft after being the No. 3 player in the 2004 class and Calvin Johnson went No. 2 overall in the draft after being No. 14 overall.
With the One-and-Done rule in the NBA, an early case is being made for Jahlil Okafor to be the top pick in the NBA Draft in 2015. While Dorial Green-Beckham has been kicked out of Missouri, it’s unlikely the top player from the 2012 class (the earliest class a player could be drafted from), will be the top overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. But Shaq Thompson (No. 3), Mario Edwards (No. 4) and Noah Spence (No. 5) are all projected as first rounders and No. 2 prospect Arik Armstead has also found his name on some mock draft first rounds.
