North Carolina Tar Heels head coach Roy Williams is the latest big name added to the list of candidates for the Los Angeles Lakers’ head-coaching vacancy, the Los Angeles Times reports.
The Lakers also expressed interest in Williams back in 2004, but he had just made the move from Kansas to North Carolina and opted to remain with the Tar Heels. A decade (and two national championships) later, Williams’ level of interest in making the jump from the NCAA to the NBA is unknown.
On Tuesday, FOX Sports Insider Bill Reiter reported UConn head coach Kevin Ollie would like to speak with the Lakers about the position. And Ollie isn’t the only high-profile name linked to the opening. The Los Angeles Times lists Tom Thibodeau, George Karl, Jeff Van Gundy, Kurt Rambis, Byron Scott and John Calipari among the potential candidates.
The Lakers finished with a 27-55 record this season, and head coach Mike D’Antoni resigned last week.
