ASU MBB: Sun Devils Lose Nail Biter to No. 13 Oregon

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 12:16 p.m. ET

ASU Basketball extended its losing streak at Oregon to six years following a 71-70 loss to the Ducks. The loss drops ASU to 3-7 in Pac-12 play.

The Oregon Ducks (20-3, 9-1) extended their school-best home win streak to 39 games with a one-point victory over the Arizona State Sun Devils (10-13, 3-7). Forward Dillon Brooks scored a game-high 27 points, including Oregon’s final 12 and the go-ahead three with 1:39 remaining.

Guard Shannon Evans II led the Sun Devils offensively, tying his season-high with 28 points. Junior Tra Holder chipped in an additional 17 points on 60 percent shooting.

Despite coming into Matthew Knight Arena as overwhelming underdogs, head coach Bobby Hurley’s team never trailed by more than eight points. In fact, ASU held the lead in multiple late-game scenarios.

Aside from Brooks’s takeover to finish the game, the Sun Devils played seamlessly, committing six turnovers and limiting the Ducks in transition.

For much of the season, the Sun Devils have been regarded as an undersized team and were deemed to be rebuilding even with the additions of Evans II, Torian Graham and freshmen Ramon Vila and Jethro Tshisumpa. During this rebuild, ASU has now challenged blue-chip programs Arizona, UCLA and Oregon, all on the road.

The Sun Devils now have a day to recuperate before playing Oregon State in Corvallis on Saturday to conclude the weekend series. The Beavers are currently last in the Pac-12 standings and have not recorded a conference win in 2017.

Tip-off between the Beavers and the Sun Devils will be at 4 p.m. MST from Gill Coliseum on Feb.4. The game can be seen on the Pac-12 Networks.
