The people at AreaVibes looked at the birthplace of every professional basketball, football, baseball and hockey player across history (using data from Sports-Reference) to figure out which states and cities were producing the highest number of athletes, and the results are fascinating. Mississippi leads all states in pros per 100k people
If you count Washington D.C. as its own state, it'd blow every other state out of the water with 53.26 pros per 100,000 residents. Mississippi leads all 50 states, with neighbor Louisiana close behind. New Mexico, meanwhile, is last in the nation.
D.C. produces more football, baseball and basketball players per 100,000 people than any other territory.
Youngstown, Ohio, produces the most professional football players of any city on average
For every 10,000 Youngstown residents, there are more than 10 pro football players. Canton - home of the Football Hall of Fame - isn't far behind. Interestingly, no city west of Texas cracks the top 20.
