Report: ‘Stampede’ injures at least 24 leaving Mayweather-Maidana fight

At least 24 people were injured leaving the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Marcos Maidana fight Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena after people mistook a loud noise for gunfire and started stampeding, Yahoo Sports reported. Mayweather won the fight by a majority decision.

What caused the noise, Clark County Fire Department battalion chief Eric Poleski told Yahoo Sports, was that "€œa temporary wall had fallen over and it made a loud bang … so they started stampeding,"€ he said.

The most severe of injuries was a bad leg laceration sustained by a woman in her 30s, the report said. The mother of a 6-year-old boy said her son was taken to the hospital after being trampled.

"I just (felt) like the people (were) over me and I am scared and I am screaming very hard," Dulce Castillo, the boy’s mother, told Yahoo. "I said to my brother, ‘Help me, help me, please.’ My son is with people (on top of him). I thought that we were dying, really."

MGM public relations director Scott Ghertner said the property’€™s management and security teams would release a statement Sunday after looking into the situation, according to the report
