Japan's Ioka defends WBA light flyweight title

OSAKA, Japan (AP)

Kazuto Ioka of Japan knocked out Thailand's Wisano Kokietgym in the ninth round on Wednesday for a successful first defense of his WBA light flyweight title.

Ioka sent Kokietgym to the canvas with two rights to the body that forced the referee to call the bout at 2 minutes, 51 seconds into the round.

Ioka improved to 12-0 with eight knockouts while Kokietgym fell to 43-9-2 with 13 KOs.

Also, Ryo Miyazaki of Japan scored a fifth-round knockout of Mexican challenger Carlos Velarde to successfully defend the WBA minimumweight crown for the first time.

Miyazaki improved to 19-0-3 (11 KOs) while Velarde fell to 22-3-1 (13 KOs).
