Burns outpoints Katisidis for WBO lightweight belt
Ricky Burns earned his second world boxing title Saturday night, easily outpointing Michael Katsidis for the interim WBO lightweight belt at Wembley Arena.
Burns relinquished the WBO super-featherweight title to make his lightweight debut against the favored Katsidis and produced a classy display, earning unanimous scores of 117-111, 117-111 and 117-112 from the judges.
Katsidis, from Australia, was more aggressive throughout but was continually thwarted by his Scottish opponent's jab and sharp counterattacks. Katsidis was cut below his left eye in the fourth round and above the eye in the ninth.
Burns improved to 33-2 (9 KOs), while Katsidis dropped to 28-5 (23 KOs).
