Top returning scorer Russell leaves NAU program

Sophomore guard DeWayne Russell, NAU's top returning scorer, no longer with team.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- Sophomore point guard DeWayne Russell is no longer with the Northern Arizona men’s basketball team, head coach Jack Murphy announced Wednesday. Russell has decided to pursue other opportunities outside of Northern Arizona University.

Russell, from Peoria High School, was NAU's top returning scorer with an average of 14.1 points per game as a freshman, which ranked seventh in the Big Sky Conference. He started 26 of 32 games and shot 39.8 percent from the field.

“I would like to thank DeWayne for all of his contributions to our university and basketball program during his time here and hope for his continued success on the floor and in the classroom,” Murphy said.

NAU opens its season on Saturday against Texas-San Antonio.
