Robot delivers first pitch at Diamondbacks game

True, the Diamondbacks are looking for pitching help, but Wednesday’s call-up from the high school ranks is not quite ready to compete for a big-league pitching job anytime soon.

The call-up is named "Bruce," and he’s a robot built by students from Paradise Valley High School’s S.T.E.M. program as part of the Science of Baseball curriculum.

Bruce launched the ceremonial first pitch at Chase Field prior to Wednesday’s Diamondbacks-Nationals game. The pitch, caught by rookie outfielder Ender Inciarte, was a slow pop up toward the plate, but nevertheless found the strike zone.

Students from Paradise Valley High School watch as their creation, Bruce the pitching robot, throws out the first pitch on Wednesday at Chase Field.
