QB Connor Brewer announces plans to transfer to Arizona

It looks like Arizona is turning into Scottsdale Chaparral South. And that Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez is stockpiling quality quarterbacks for the future.

Arizona received a verbal commitment from former University of Texas QB Connor Brewer (6-foot-2, 195 pounds) late Monday night, giving UA a bevy of former Firebirds on UA’s roster and a handful of young quarterbacks who will fight for the top quarterback spot next season.

Brewer, who made the decision to transfer three weeks ago, announced his choice Monday on his Twitter account.

Brewer’s commitment comes just two days after Arizona picked up commitments from five high school players, including Chaparral tight end Trevor Wood and Chandler High safety J.R. Hunt. Brewer joins former high school teammate Davonte’ Neal as an incoming transfer on Arizona’s roster. Neal, a receiver who played at Notre Dame last season, is awaiting a ruling on whether he’ll be eligible this fall, though it’s likely he will be sit out the season as a redshirt.

Tight ends coach Charlie Ragle was the head coach at Chaparral before joining Rodriguez’s staff before last season.

Also committing to the Wildcats over the weekend were defensive tackle Sharif Williams of Fresno, Calf., tight end Darrell Cloy of La Habra, Calif., and cornerback Kwesi Mashack of Norco, Calif.

Brewer gives Arizona 20 commitments for its 2014 class, and he’ll be joined by as many as six others in competition for the starting quarterback job — Jesse Scroggins, Javelle Allen, Nick Isham, incoming freshmen Anu Solomon and Khari McGee and 2014 high school recruit Brandon Dawkins — assuming they all stick around.

Brewer, who started the 2012 Under Armour All-American game, was a four-star recruit who became the first quarterback in Arizona high school history to win three consecutive state titles. While at Chaparral he was 41-2. He had 100 career touchdown passes and threw for more than 7,500 yards in his career. He redshirted last season at Texas.

His brother, Charles Brewer, is a pitcher in the Arizona Diamondbacks farm system.
