Oklahoma State’s Smart named Big 12 preseason player of the year

Oklahoma State guard Marcus Smart has been named the Big 12 Conference preseason player of the year and was joined on the all-conference preseason first team by teammate Markel Brown.

Smart is just the second player in Big 12 history to return after being named the conference player of the year the previous season. As a freshman, Smart led the Cowboys to the NCAA tournament and scored in double figures in 28 games a season ago. He has already been named to multiple All-American teams this season.

Smart was considered to be an NBA lottery pick last season, but decided to return for his sophomore season.

Along with Brown and Smart, Isaiah Austin of Baylor, Melvin Ejim of Iowa State, Cory Jefferson of Baylor and Andrew Wiggins of Kansas were the other preseason, first-team picks.

There were no players from Oklahoma named as first teamers or honorable mention.
