NAU picked fifth in Big Sky preseason football polls

The Northern Arizona football team was selected to finish second in the Big Sky in coaches' and media polls released Tuesday.

Northern Arizona was picked to finish fifth in the Big Sky in the coaches' and media polls released at the Big Sky Kickoff on Tuesday.

Defending champion Eastern Washington was picked to win the league in both polls. Montana was voted second, followed by Montana State, Cal Poly and the Lumberjacks. The top five were the same in both the coaches' and media poll.

NAU finished second in the Big Sky last season with a 7-1 conference record. The Lumberjacks went undefeated at home during the regular season and have not lost a home conference game since November 2012.

The Lumberjacks last season advanced to the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) playoffs for the first time in 10 years. NAU led the FCS in defensive touchdowns with eight scores.

NAU's first conference contest will be Sept. 27 against visiting Cal Poly at the Walkup Skydome. The season begins Aug. 30 at San Diego State.
