MRI confirms ACL tear for Cowboys tight end John Phillips

Todd Archer – The Dallas Morning News

The Cowboys’ fears have been confirmed by an MRI: John Phillips is out for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

Phillips had held out hope that the tests would not confirm what the medical staff felt after examining him Sunday night, but now the Cowboys have to move on without a valued player on offense and special teams.

Phillips could play all three tight end spots – on the line, H-back and F-back – and was a special teams contributor. It is even more critical for Martellus Bennett to get up to speed after being slowed for much of camp with a sprained ankle.

The Cowboys hope Bennett can play Thursday vs. Oakland at Cowboys Stadium.
