Tom Izzo’s team really opened some eyes with that great performance against Kentucky in Chicago. Senior center Adreian Payne is averaging 17.5 points and 7.8 rebounds for the Spartans, who really get up and down the court.
2. Kansas Jayhawks 3-0 --
Freshman center Joel Embiid came off the bench for 16 points and 13 rebounds in an 86-66 Kansas victory over Iona. The big guy is getting better every day. Perry Ellis had 21 points on 9-for-11 shooting.
3. Louisville Cardinals 4-0 --
The Cardinals averaged 88.7 points in their first four victories, including a 99-54 thumping of Cornell. Russ Smith is averaging over 20 points to lead the defending national champs.
4. Arizona Wildcats 5-0 --
The Wildcats are set to put their 5-0 record – and freshman Aaron Gordon – on the big stage at Madison Square Garden after beating Rhode Island in the second round of the NIT Season Tip-Off.
5. Kentucky Wildcats 4-1 --
John Calipari’s young team scored 202 points in victories over Texas-Arlington and Robert Morris. James Young was unstoppable from three-point range against UT-Arlington.
6. Ohio State Buckeyes 4-0 --
It was a big statement win for the Buckeyes when they went to Marquette and dumped the Golden Eagles. Ohio State is playing outstanding defense. Marquette scored just 35 points.
7. Oklahoma State Cowboys 4-0 --
The Cowboys knocked off their first three opponents by a combined 143 points. If that wasn’t impressive enough, Oklahoma State crushed Memphis 101-80 behind 39 points from Marcus Smart.
8. Duke Blue Devils 4-1 --
The upset alert sounded Tuesday night when East Carolina was hanging close at Cameron Indoor Stadium. But Rodney Hood’s 30 points and Jabari Parker’s six blocks were enough to hold off the Pirates.
9. Wisconsin Badgers 4-0 --
The Badgers are off to an impressive start with victories over St. John’s and Florida. Tuesday night, Wisconsin put 103 points on the board to defeat North Dakota.
10. Syracuse Orange 4-0 --
Syracuse may have been daydreaming about sandy beaches and beautiful sunsets. The Orange are 4-0 and headed to Maui after a near disaster and 56-50 win over St. Francis Brooklyn.
11. Virginia Commonwealth Rams 3-0 --
The Rams are already showing their versatility, beating Virginia 59-56 but scoring 96 against Illinois State and 92 against Winthrop.
12. Florida Gators 3-1 --
The Gators didn’t handle their first road trip very well, falling to Wisconsin 59-53 at the Kohl Center. Florida has an interesting stretch approaching against Florida State, UConn, Kansas and Memphis.
13. Gonzaga Bulldogs 3-0 --
Gary Bell, Jr., and Kevin Pangos give the Bulldogs a solid 1-2 scoring punch. Gonzaga takes on Washington State before heading to the Maui Invitational.
14. Oregon Ducks 3-0 --
The Ducks were impressive holding off Georgetown in the season opener at Camp Humphreys in South Korea. Junior guard Joseph Young is averaging 30 points, including a career-high 36 against Western Carolina.
15. Wichita State Shockers 5-0 --
If you watched the 2013 Final Four you probably remember the names Cleanthony Early and Fred VanVleet. They lead four players averaging double figures for the undefeated Shockers.
16. Connecticut Huskies 4-0 --
Guard Shabazz Napier is a triple-double threat every time he takes the floor. Napier is averaging 13.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 7.8 assists, leading the Huskies in all three categories.
17. Memphis Tigers 1-1 --
The Tigers had a tough assignment playing in Stillwater, Okla., in their second game of the year. Memphis had no answer for Marcus Smart. But many teams will experience that this season.
18. New Mexico Lobos 2-0 --
The Lobos appear to be just fine without coach Steve Alford, who left for UCLA. New Mexico scored 109 points in a win over Charleston Southern and Cameron Bairstow is averaging 25.5 points and eight rebounds.
19. Creighton Bluejays 3-0 --
Doug McDermott is off to a terrific start but that’s not a surprise. The Bluejays lead the nation in assists, shoot 54 percent from the floor and average over 95 points a game.
20. Iowa State Cyclones 4-0 --
The Cyclones got a little prime time exposure and made the most of it. Call it Hilton Magic if you like. The fact is that Melvin Ejim is a terrific player and coach Fred Hoiberg has built a squad to challenge in the Big 12.
21. Michigan Wolverines 2-1 --
It could take a while for the Wolverines to settle in without Trey Burke. It’s never easy for ranked teams to play in Ames, and now Michigan understands that. Duke is on the schedule on Dec. 3.
22. UCLA Bruins 3-0 --
New coach Steve Alford doesn’t take his Bruins on the road until the sixth game against Nevada. The Bruins will be under the spotlight as they make their transition to Alford.
23. Baylor Bears 4-0 --
The Bears got off to a good start with wins over Colorado and South Carolina. Senior guard Barry Heslip is averaging 16.3 points and has only played more than 22 minutes once.
24. Indiana Hoosiers 4-0 --
Tom Crean’s team is averaging 92 points, so the offense is obviously working. The Hoosiers are also cleaning the boards, averaging over 52 rebounds. When you talk about the nation’s best freshmen, you’d better include Noah Vonleh.
25. Brigham Young Cougars 4-1 --
The Cougars are on our radar with a 4-0 record. BYU is averaging 96.3 points a game with 20.3 assists per game heading into a big game Wednesday night at home against Iowa State. That’s a good test for both teams.
