FOX Sports Arizona’s “Classic Coyotes Tuesday” continues this week with two new episodes on Tuesday, Nov. 20.
double-header begins at 8 p.m. and features the first Coyotes’ game televised by FOX Sports — on Oct. 18, 1996 vs. the Philadelphia Flyers. This game was filled with firsts. The Flyers traveled to Arizona to play the Coyotes (formerly the Winnipeg Jets) for the first time in history. Philadelphia’s Scott Daniels scored two of his eight career goals during this game. And this was a game that we at FOX Sports Arizona will always treasure; the first Coyotes game airing on our network. Doug McLeod and Charlie Simmer are introduced to the Arizona audience and call the action.
The night’s second game, starting at 10 p.m., features the Jan. 7, 2012, Coyotes’ 5-1 victory over the New York Islanders. This game will be remembered as one of the most memorable in franchise history, as franchise icon Shane Doan notches the first hat trick of his long career — ending a streak of 1,161 games. Making it all the more memorable was the fact that the puck crossed the line at literally the last possible second of play. Goaltender Mike Smith said: “I’ve never seen a guy want a goal so bad. He was out there the last five minutes, probably four and a half of it. It was just a special moment for a guy that deserves it.”
