The charges include possession of a narcotic drug for sale, possession of marijuana for sale, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony drug offense and possession of narcotics paraphernalia, according to a news release from the City of Tucson.
“We are aware of the situation with Patrick Onwuasor,” Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez said in a statement. “He has been removed from the program.”
It was the only statement or comment made through the University of Arizona.
Onwuasor was arrested after police reported finding narcotics, drug paraphernalia, marijuana and a weapon during the search of Onwuasor's apartment.
The search warrant was issued in connection with an investigation by Tucson police into a home invasion on the west side of the city on April 29. The Beverly Hills Police Department in California, investigating a separate incident in its jurisdiction, provided information to the Tucson police that resulted in the warrant being issued and served in late June.
Onwuasor was indicted by a grand jury, presented himself for arraignment on Monday, July 22, in the presence of his attorney and released. Tucson police noted that the investigation into the April home invasion continues, but Onwuasor was not implicated as being present when it occurred.
Onwuasor, from Inglewood, Calif., had 36 tackles last season and was expected to compete for a starting spot this season.
