A.J. Pollock and Chris Owings wasted little time fitting into the lineup after their return from rehab assignments in Reno. Pollock had three hits, including a double and a stolen base, in his second game back on Thursday and also took a home run away with a catch at the fence. Pollock has hit sixth and seventh in the order, with Ender Inciarte remaining as the leadoff hitter while shifting to left field. Owings is 3 for 10 with an RBI, making both of his starts at second base.

As if the Dodgers needed more help, they have received some from minor league callups Joc Pederson and Carlos Frias. Pederson, an outfielder, became the first Pacific Coast Leaguer in 80 years to have a 30-30 season with 33 homers and 30 stolen bases at Albuquerque before being promoted when rosters expanded. Frias threw six six scoreless innings in his first major league start Wednesday, further deepening the Dodgers' rotation.

On Thursday in San Diego, Aaron Hill made his first start at third base since his 2005 rookie season in Toronto. Hill had two hits, an RBI and made a diving catch on a line drive by Cory Spangenberg. He is likely to see more time at third, manager Kirk Gibson has said, as the D-backs take a long look at Chris Owings at second base and Didi Gregorius at shortstop in preparation for 2015.

Lesser of two evils?
The Diamondbacks draw a tough customer on Sunday in L.A. starter Hyun-Jin Ryu, but they catch a breaking in missing out on MVP candidate Clayton Kershaw. Kershaw leads the majors with 17 victories and lowered his ERA to a major league-best 1.70 by giving up one run in eight innings against Washington on Tuesday. The Dodgers have won 19 of his 23 starts. If the D-backs had not scored seven runs off Kershaw in 1 2/3 innings on May 17, his ERA would be 1.34.
