The Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw has made 13 consecutive quality stats in a run at his third NL Cy Young Award in the last four years, and he has surfaced in MVP candidate alongside Miami right fielder Giancarlo Stanton. The D-backs have been a recent impediment. They are 5-3 against Kershaw since 2012, and they roughed him up for seven runs in 1-2/3 innings on May 17, the only time he has given up more than three runs this season.

Play now, rest later
So much for extra time off. Manager Kirk Gibson appears to have rethought his plan to give catcher Miguel Montero a little more rest in the final weeks of the season. Montero has started eight of the last nine games and remains one of the most productive catchers in the game. Montero leads major league catchers with 67 RBI and he is one of five to have a slugging percentage over .400. His is .409.

Yasiel Puig has put up some good offensive numbers -- 32 doubles, nine triples, 13 homers, 59 RBIs, .305 batting average, .889 OPS -- in his first full season. Good work. Then there is his base running. Puig is 7 for 14 on stolen base attempts, and he ran his way into a triple play Sunday when he tried to score from second at the end of a 5-4-3 double play. He also ran into a triple play against Cleveland on July 1.
