Friday -- D-backs 5, Cubs 4; Arizona rallies in 6th to beat Chicago. Saturday -- D-backs 9, Cubs 3; Miley wins third straight. Sunday -- RHP Josh Collmenter (7-5, 3.80) vs. RHP Jake Arrieta (5-1, 1.95), 12:30 p.m., FOX Sports Arizona.
The D-backs can't get a do-over on the first half, which left them 16 games under .500 and last in the NL West, but they can make the most of the second half in a couple ways. First, they can continue playing as hard as they have, despite the poor results. Fans certainly appreciate that much. They can also climb back toward respectability and keep developing young players. Three games against the equally dismal Cubs seems a decent place to start building momentum.

Back in the big leagues
After being designated for assignment in June and spending more than a month in the minors, Trevor Cahill makes his return to the big leagues Friday. Cahill struggled mightily early in the season, first losing his job in the starting rotation and then struggling in the bullpen. In six starts for Triple-A Reno, Cahill went 2-2 with a 3.49 ERA. Over 28 1/3 innings, he tallied 27 strikeouts and 20 walks. The D-backs hope he can rediscover his form as a major league starter.

The D-backs brought outfielder Mark Trumbo back earlier than planned after a power surge on his minor league rehab assignment, but he went 1 for 9 with four strikeouts in San Francisco, perhaps showing a little rust. He should be back to playing every day now, and once he finds his swing he should add some needed power back into the D-backs' lineup and perhaps improve his .200 batting average.

This series features two of the National League's best young first basemen in Paul Goldschmidt and Anthony Rizzo, both of whom appeared in the All-Star Game on Tuesday. While Goldschmidt, the NL starter, leads the league's first basemen in RBI, doubles and on-base percentage, Rizzo leads the group with 20 home runs -- second most in the NL. It's safe to say Goldschmidt is the superior player right now, but Rizzo is the cornerstone to the Cubs that Goldschmidt is to the D-backs.
