Tuesday -- Giants 5, D-backs 1; Petit dominates in complete game. Wednesday -- Giants 5; D-backs 0; Arizona bats silenced. Thursday -- RHP Randall Delgado (3-3, 5.40) vs. RHP Jake Peavy (4-4, 2.36), noon, FOX Sports Arizona.
Swimming, not sinking
Discovery through immersion may not be the easiest way to go, but the D-backs have learned that their force-fed rookie class appears to be capable for the long haul. Outfielder Ender Enciarte (2.2), infielder Chris Owings (1.7) and outfielder David Peralta (1.2) rank in the top seven in NL in WAR (wins above replacement player) according to FanGraphs, and none has played more than 100 games. Chase Anderson has an 0.8 WAR.
A say in the race
The D-backs will have a big say in the outcome of the NL West race. The Los Angeles Dodgers have a 3 1/2-game lead over San Francisco after sweeping the D-backs last weekend. The Dodgers won the season series, 15-4. The Giants are 8-5 against the D-backs with six games remaining, starting with the three at AT&T Park. The D-backs are 3-3 in six games by the Bay.

Randall Delgado on Thursday will make his second start since being reinserted into the starting rotation last week in San Diego. Delgado has pitched well in four career appearances in San Francisco, going 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA. He threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings there last year. With six starters, manager Kirk Gibson can lighten the load as young starters Josh Collmenter, Vidal Nuno and Chase Anderson exceed their career highs in innings pitched.

Buster busting out
Buster Posey had sparked the Giants' return to serious contention in the NL West. Posey is hitting .493 with seven home runs and 21 RBI in 16 games since a four-hit game against the Chicago Cubs on Aug. 21. Posey was 5 for 5 with three RBI against Milwaukee on Aug. 29 and has five homers in his last 11 games. The Giants have won nine of their last 12 and have gained three games on the Dodgers in a month.
